Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody
Joseph Mazzello, Rami Malek, Gwilym Lee, and Ben Hardy in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)

When it comes to Bohemian Rhapsody, I simply want to talk about the brilliance of Rami Malek. With the Oscars quickly approaching, I have little to say about the Best Picture category other than to say the winner should not be Black Panther (it’s a comic book movie — and I type that sitting among piles of comic books) and it should not be A Star is Born (I haven’t watched it yet, but it’s the fourth movie of the same name… at some point you’re bound to get the concept near-perfect). I also don’t know that it should be this film (although only because BlackkKlansman was better). I will, however, say that if Rami Malek does not win the Oscar for Best Lead Actor, it will be a travesty.

While the movie itself is good, with great musical choices… it is plain to see that Rami makes the film. He IS Freddie Mercury on camera and without his magic, I’m not sure this film could even exist. You can see watching the behind the scenes footage just how much he puts into creating the character, just how much he cares about getting it right. The costume department also deserves a huge shout out for this film, it surprises me that the costume department did not get an Oscar nomination.

I will say, one thing that amused me was the appearance of Mike Myers, I felt he was unrecognizable and disappeared into the character so well. In fact, I saw his name in the credits and had to do a double take at his character on the screen. I’ve missed seeing him in films and this appearance is a testament to what an incredible actor he truly is.

If you are a fan of Rami Malek, brilliant acting, amazing costuming, or Queen music, you should definitely check this out.
